What to See

The Basin is a geological formation that has been referred to as a “great natural pothole.” It is a granite abyss 20 feet wide, complete with a small waterfall. The Basin is about a ten minute walk from the Franconia Notch parking area.

Trail heads to Cascade Brook Falls and Kinsman Falls are also accessible from the parking area. Other features of Franconia Notch include Avalanche Falls, Liberty Gorge Cascade, Flume Gorge, the Pool, and Cloudland Falls. The waterfalls may be small, but they are breathtaking nonetheless.

Explore the waterfalls of Lincoln

Flume Gorge LodgingThe White Mountains boasts more than 100 waterfalls, some visible from the road, and others that may require a hike. There are many in Lincoln, and we think the best in the state include Franconia Falls, Georgian Falls, and Avalanche Falls!

Franconia Falls is located at the end of one of the flattest long-distance strolls in the White Mountains. The lack of elevation gain makes the Franconia Falls hike a favorite for families. Not to mention that it has two natural waterslides when the brook is running low enough. The falls can be easily accessed year-round, either by foot, mountain bike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski. Franconia Falls has sunny slabs of rock, swimming pools that widely vary in size, depth and current, and the possibilities of roving around the falls for hours of refreshing pleasure.

Many visitors that go to Georgiana Falls only reach the lower half of this waterfall. The lower falls consist of a 30-foot high set of cascades spread across a 20-foot wide ledge. At the base of this waterfall is a deep, dark pool. At the falls there is a very spacious ledge for sunbathing and picnicking. Although this waterfall is regularly visited, you can still find a spot to claim as your own at this highly photogenic, delightful spot.

Avalanche Falls is the crown jewel of Flume Gorge. The location pretty much can’t be beaten. After making your way up the walkway in Flume Gorge, you will pass by the base of this waterfall. The base of the falls is no more than 10 feet away when you walk past.

Hobo Railroad Harvest Time Express

A classic New England foliage ride, The Hobo Railroad leaves for its 80-minute excursions from Lincoln (just down the road from Woodwards) daily between September 17 and October 15, 2017.  Each year, life-sized scarecrows created by the world famous Annalee Doll Co. are a favorite attraction with a new theme. 2017 is the year of the “Scarecrows of Sports”! Trains depart daily from Lincoln at 11 am & 1 pm.

Mt. Washington Cog Railway, Marshfield Station

The allure of Mt. Washington is extraordinary in autumn, and the Cog Railway is an ideal way for the entire family to enjoy the mountain and foliage. This historic railway carries passengers via biodiesel engine or vintage steam engine with replica coaches up a three-mile-long trestle to the 6,288-foot summit. On the ride up some of the steepest railroad tracks in North America, the landscape and foliage change with the elevation. From the summit, you’ll take in panoramas of the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire to Vermont and, on clear days, as far as Maine and Canada.

Conway Scenic Railroad

On the Crawford Notch train, you’ll travel on tracks that were laid in the 1870s and enjoy some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the East … past sheer bluffs, steep ravines, cascading brooks and streams, and panoramic mountain vistas. Live commentary onboard includes history and folklore of the railroad and area, as well as points of interest. The Notch train will run September 5-7, September 9-15, October 15-20, and October 24, 26, 28.

Café Lafayette Dinner Train

For a more elegant experience, indulge in a ride in a beautifully restored rail car complete with an elegant, 5-course dinner. The Café Lafayette Dinner Train takes a leisurely 2-hour ride on the Boston & Maine track along the Pemigewasset River that allows you to admire the scenery while enjoying a distinctive culinary experience. For a panoramic view, reserve a spot in the 24-seat observation dome, the top level of the three-tiered 1952 Pullman Planetarium car. One of five built by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, it’s the last in operation in the United States.

New Hampshire’s Back Roads and Scenic Byways

Whether you’re coming up north for Bike Week or summer vacation, we urge you to explore the back roads and scenic byways in search of New Hampshire’s history and beauty. Explore on your own, or stop at the White Mountains Visitor’s Center in North Woodstock (just down the road from Woodwards) and pick up their excellent map of a 100-mile round-trip exploration of the region called The White Mountain Trail. The beautiful route will take you past classic attractions like Clark’s Trading Post and The Flume Gorge where you’ll discover waterfalls, covered bridges, scenic pools and glacial boulders…all before you even get to The Notch (Franconia Notch State Park), Cannon Mountain, and the Old Man in the Mountain Museum.
 
Following the trail further will lead you to many additional favorite spots including Santa’s Village, the Mt Washington Cog Railway and Auto Road, and Story Land. If it’s all too much for a single trip, we recommend narrowing your excursion to a single focus (a different focus each time you visit): Follow the Covered Bridge Trail to explore this integral part of both the history and landscape of the White Mountains. Waterfalls are another great focus of exploration. The White Mountains boasts more than 100 waterfalls, some visible from the road, others that may require a hike.
 
If history is your thing, there’s a trail for you too. In just the region closest to Woodwards, you’ll discover “The Frost Place,” a museum and poetry center located at Robert Frost’s old homestead in Franconia. While your there, check out the 200-year-old blast furnace that still stands from of the day of Franconia Iron Works and the Sugar Hill Historical Museum which is currently featuring a historical hat exhibit.

mapleCome on up! Experience the centuries-old craft of maple sugaring and taste why pure New Hampshire maple syrup is the enduring harbinger of spring during Maple Sugaring Month, hosted by the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association.

Between March 11 and April 2, 2017, you can participate in this New England tradition at one of several sugar houses in the vicinity of Woodwards Resort & Inn!

Just down the road in North Woodstock, the authentic and old fashioned Fadden General Store has been family-owned since 1896 and turning out some of New Hampshire’s best syrup! In fact, their on-site maple sugar house is a 5-time winner of “Best Maple Syrup in New Hampshire.” Tour the maple shack or the maple museum or just explore the store for fun and yummy souvenirs to take home.

If you choose to be a part of the NH Maple Experience at the historic Rocks Estate, you’ll take a horse-drawn wagon ride around the property and see up close the workings of a modern-day (pipeline collecting) system and visit an operating sugarhouse. Visitors will also learn how to drill and tap a maple tree. The day’s program will finish with maple syrup and fresh donuts. The family-geared program is educational “but a lot of fun, too,” says director Niel Manley. “People really enjoy the experience of tapping a tree themselves.”

Benton’s Sugar Shack in nearby Thornton will be open weekends until April 2  and will offer maple making tours from “trees to jug”, maple cotton candy, and live music on Sundays.

On Maple weekend (March 25-26), Bridgewater Mountain Maple will be offering coffee and doughnuts as well as free samples of fresh maple syrup, maple candy, maple popcorn, maple cotton candy, and their favorite sugar on snow! A “crew” will be available at the sugar house to guide guests through our process of making Maple Syrup.

Winter in the White Mountains is in full swing, so the time for making memories is now!

While the skiing is terrific this winter, we realize that not every winter-weather lover can be a pro on powder. Non-skiers in search of wintry pursuits will happily find a whole lot to love in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The state turns into an all-out snow-white wonderland with snowmobiles crisscrossing trails from Vermont to Maine. Plan your own snowmobile adventure using the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation Trails Bureau, or make it easy with a Woodwards/SledVentures package (SledVentures is located directly across the street from Woodwards.)

Loon Mountain offers snow tubing for those who want the thrill of a downhill descent — sans the skis or snowboard. And, at Loon, you can do your tube runs under the moonlight.

Skis and tubes, however, aren’t necessary for a near-peak experience on New Hampshire’s highest mountain, Mount Washington.  In fact, you need not even get cold. The Mount SnowCoach offers a comfortable winter tour to the sub-arctic world at treeline on Mount Washington. Upon reaching the top of the tour, passengers are invited to exit the SnowCoach for a few minutes to take photos of the breathtaking views overlooking the Great Gulf Wilderness and the Presidential mountain range.

If you want to add a bit more adventure to this trip, plan to snowshoe down the mountain rather than take the SnowCoach back down.
